Social work continuing education is not just something that social
workers in the United States should have but in many areas it is
something that they must have in order to have their licenses to
practice renewed. The requirement for continuing education courses often
vary from one place to another as do the specific subjects that must be
taken. The same can be said for how many hours of social work
continuing education that social workers are expected to complete.
As a worker in a helping profession it is your responsibility to find
out about CE requirements for your license renewal and then to make sure
that you comply with these requirements. It is not the responsibility
of your supervisor, your workplace or any associations or organizations
that you belong to, to provide you with pertinent information regarding
social work continuing education. The ball is in your court and you must
be proactive in doing what is expected of you. The same can be said for
keeping up with guidelines or rules as they relate to CE for your
occupation. From one year to the next they are subject to change and you
must know and understand what changes are taking place.
Social work continuing education can help licensed social workers to
keep abreast of new developments in the field that they work in. They
can also allow them the opportunity to meet and converse with others who
understand the trials, tribulations and joys of working in the human
services field.
There are some CE courses that must be taken in person at local schools
and colleges while others can be taken through distance learning. Find
out what your CE needs are early enough so that you will be able to fit
them into your busy schedule. Once you know what you need and you know
your timeline for completing the courses you can then look at your work
and family schedule and decide what dates and times you have available
to fulfill the needs for the work that must be completed.
You do not want your license to lapse. Not only will this cause you
problems with your chosen professional but it will also cause you
problems at your place of employment. You will not be able to attend to
your clients, which would not be good for those who need the services
that you provide.
In most areas a social worker needs to renew his or her license roughly
every 24 months. While there is paperwork involved in this process there
are also other educational requirements that you must fulfill.
Regardless of whether you are a new social worker, a senior worker or
you fall somewhere in the middle coursework for CE can ensure that you
keep on learning and can therefore be the best social worker that you
can be. You will study subjects in CE that are already familiar to you
while at the same time you will venture into unknown territory and will
learn concepts that are new and hopefully will pique your interests. All
of the topics will have one purpose which is to allow you to do your
job to the best of your abilities.
